Do you think that management training might help you to do your job better? Maybe I can help you. I am an experienced engineering manager that loves to coach people. Interested? Please mail me at: firstname.lastname@example.org
I believe managing a team is craftmanship. Meaning you learn it by practice and not by reading books. I’m working for more than 20 years in IT and I still learn something new every day. Most companies and organisations need IT. It supports their primary process and since they are pretty dependent on these systems, a lot of them have their own IT department. If you happen to be, like me, a leader of such a team, you know that leading IT teams isn’t easy. Why? Making hardware and software is a complex task. Technology is proceeding fast, changing the market and changing IT development. So as a lead of an IT team you often need to support your team to change.
So how do you that? That’s a question that I have asked myself many, many times, and I have found some answers to it. Not all of them, but enough to help others. How I learned these things? In the biography section on this site you can find the straightforward answer to that. But if you ask me from what experience I’ve learned the most, this would be my answer. I consider myself very lucky that I have been given the responsibility twice to grow an IT team very fast. In 2007 at TomTom Navigation Systems and in 2014 at Coolblue, which is an online retailer in the Netherlands and Belgium. In both cases my team grew from several tens of developers to more than 150 within two years.
I’ve asked myself why this such a great experience? Growing fast means you and your team need to be very flexible. You need to take decisions very quickly, you can try things out and have the opportunity to correct them when you fail. This is why you learn very fast which (development) processes work best and which organisation structures. Also how you can help yourself an others to keep workload under control, and why coaching your team works so much better than telling them what to do for example.
If the topics mentioned in the last paragraph are things you’re struggling with, I might be able to help you. I do have a day-time job, but if you are willing to visit me in evenings I love to share the knowledge I have. We can do this one-on-one, but I also can do pizza sessions at my home. If you want to know about this, please read the blog I have written on this.
